Welcome...
to Long Island Wine Country

Jane Starwood, editor
Fall is always an exciting time in wine country, with the year's labors culminating in the intense work of harvest. So much depends on the vagaries of nature. In years like this, when nature has been so forthcoming that harvest arrived several weeks earlier than usual, vineyard managers and winemakers rejoice in the bounty of the vine and wine lovers look forward with delighted anticipation to an amazing vintage.
This issue offers a colorful array of features and lots of news from the wineries. In “All that Glitters,” Tracy Kamens lets readers in on one of Long Island's open secrets: Our region makes truly top-notch sparkling wines in the traditional method of Champagne.
In other special features, we visit with three veteran Long Island winemakers in their new digs, recap in pictures the first annual Long Island Wine & Food Festival, share the excitement of Carnaval during Sparkling Pointe's grand opening weekend, and offer you a visual preview of the newly opened McCall Vineyards in Cutchogue.
We hope you enjoy all these special features and our usual array of useful information about the wineries, restaurants, lodgings, tours and other attractions of our beautiful East End of Long Island. Be sure to take a few moments to peruse our three-part calendar for music, winemakers' tours and other entertaining and educational events at the wineries.
Here's to a long, lovely fall and a cozy winter, sipping a glass of Long Island wine by the fire.
Cheers!
