ACKERLY POND VINEYARDS
From the big gray barn that has stood as an icon in the heart of Peconic for 100 years, comes Ackerly Pond Vineyards.
Named after a pond one mile to the east that was once the site of a grist mill, it was established seven years ago by Ray Blum,
who has been growing grapes and producing fine wine on the North Fork since 1980.
Retired from the FAA as an air traffic controller, he and his wife, Jill, a retired pharmaceutical microbiologist, devote their full attention to growing their own chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot on prime farmland in Southold and Peconic.
Wine from these grapes is being released with the Ackerly Pond Vineyards label and has already won high acclaim and awards. The big barn, with all its historic charm, now serves as the tasting and sales room.
"We literally just backed a couple of tractors out, swept the floor and opened the doors," Jill said. "We left everything just the way it's been for 100 years."
BAITING HOLLOW FARM VINEYARD
One of Long Island’s newest hot spots, the beautiful Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard combines country hospitality and elegance to create the perfect atmosphere for wine tasting. Weekends feature live rock and blues bands from 2 to 6 p.m., vineyard tours and pony rides, making BHF Vineyard a favorite destination for the whole family. Guests are introduced to BHFV rescue horses like Sir Galahad, the great-great grandson of Man o’ War. These special horses and their wonderful stories are now beginning to draw as big a crowd as the fine French vines and great entertainment. On any given day, founder Sam Rubin, 81 years young, can be seen out in the fields, tilling the soil. This personal touch is the secret to the exceptional flavor found in BHFV wines. It also makes for an exceptional experience. The Rubin family is almost always on the property and is eager to welcome guests. BHFV features a rather unique selection of gifts and in-stock as well as custom-made gift baskets for all occasions. BHFV is now hosting weddings and other special events. Private tastings by reservation, such as the Chocolate Lover’s Tasting, are available for parties of 15 or more.

SANNINO'S BELLA VITA VINEYARD
Bella Vita Vineyard is a custom home winemakers' center, family-owned and operated by Anthony and Lisa Sannino. The newest wine experience on the North Fork, Bella Vita Vineyard provides the equipment, knowledge and premium grapes to help members produce the best possible wine. Anthony and Lisa are dedicated to giving members a complete education in the vine-to-wine process.
Memberships begin with a harvest festival, where members can hand-harvest their own grapes. They will then be involved in several educational winemaking sessions that take them through crushing, pressing, filling a barrel, clarifying and stabilizing, designing a custom label and bottling, corking and labeling the wine. At year's end, each member will take home a barrel's worth of custom-made wine to share with family and friends. Informative viticulture and wine-tasting sessions are also part of the annual membership.
"We're not selling wine, we're selling the experience," is the Sannino family's motto. Bella Vita Vineyard is where wine lovers can become part-time vintners.

Castello di Borghese Vineyard and Winery was recently named Editors’ Choice for Best Winery by Long Island Press.
As the premier vineyard on Long Island, Borghese Vineyard has the oldest vines producing some of the finest wines in the region. The Borgheses agree with the age-old winemaker’s wisdom, “a good wine is first made in the field,” so they tend to their soil with great care.
Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc are Castello di Borghese’s signature wines. The winery has produced many award-winners, including its Meritage red blend and Chardonnays.
When Marco Borghese - winemaker, chef and co-owner - crafts his elegant wines, he stays mindful of the sophisticated wine-and-food pairings his wife and co-owner, Ann Marie Borghese, will create.
The Terra Cotta Gallery is typically filled with interesting art, people and food samplings.

CLOVIS POINT
In 2001 the partners of Clovis Point purchased 10 acres of farmland and a beautiful barn with a dream of creating a small, top-flight winery and tasting room for lovers of fine wine.
All the partners are committed to investing sufficient resources to ensure the highest quality in the vineyard, winery and tasting room.
Clovis Point has almost 20 acres planted in Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Chardonnay and four years "worth of wine already in bottle, tank or barrel. Clovis Point believes its wines are distinctive not the typical Merlot or Chardonnay" because the winemaker actively combines fruit from different vineyard lots with unique characteristics to make complex wines full of character and balance.
The tasting room is a former potato barn built in the 1920s. While it has been completely modernized, its structure and charm remain intact. The cedar-shake exterior, slate-like roof, copper gutters, bluestone flooring, mahogany doors and windows and vineyard views make the tasting room and patio an elegant site for wine tasting and special events.

CHANNING DAUGHTERS
Channing Daughters winery is dedicated to making high quality wines starting in the vineyard with excellent management, low yields and hand harvesting of grapes.
The winery grows 50% of its grapes and carefully selects growers who share their passion to provide a unique lot of grapes for several of its wines.
Channing Daughters specializes in the production of small, individual lots of wine made from an array of grape varieties, including pinot grigio, tocai friulano, muscat ottonel,
sauvignon blanc, blaufrankisch, chardonnay and merlot. The grape juices and musts are fermented in a variety of artisanal methods and the resulting young wines blended
to achieve varietal wines and multi-varietal blended wines. The use of wild yeast, lees contact with white wines, minimal fining and filtration, and gravity bottling allow the
natural flavor of the wines to develop and intensify.

Croteaux
Croteaux Vineyards is dedicated exclusively to rosé — dry, fruity, fun-to-drink, pink wines styled after those made in the South of France for centuries. Instead of making rosé the typical way, as a by-product of red wine, Croteaux grows and hand-harvests its grapes with rosé in mind.
After extensive soil preparation on the site of a historic Southold farm, carefully selected clones of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc were planted in 2003. The vines are meticulously tended by hand to ensure maximum quality. The fruit is harvested early, when it’s in optimum condition and the skins are just thick enough to allow for subtle color and tannin in the wine.
Currently, three distinct styles of Merlot rosé are available: sheer and delicate; a crisp and fruity thirst-quencher; and a full-bodied style fermented in French oak. Visitors may taste these critically acclaimed, food-friendly, boutique wines in the courtyard garden of an 18th-century barn overlooking the vines or stay cozy in a rustic-modern tasting barn.

DILIBERTO WINERY
With just four acres of planted vines, Diliberto is certainly one of the smallest vineyards on Long Island's East End. Co-owners Sal and Maryann Diliberto have a passion for wine and the role it can play in life. Their food-friendly wines have received outstanding reviews from the beginning, when their first foray into the world of wine competition met with exceptional success.
All three of the wines they entered in the New York Wine & Food Classic in August 2004 were awarded gold medals. A year later, their 2003 Merlot was named "Best Merlot" in the 2005 Wine & Food Classic competition.
The Dilibertos planted their vineyard in 1998 and gathered in their first harvest in 2001. The fields were initially planted to merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and chardonnay. Winemaker Sal Diliberto crafts his wines with the least amount of intervention. His goal is to let the grapes become the best wine they can be without manipulation.
A tasting room is being built on Manor Lane, with a grand opening expected on Memorial Day weekend, 2007. The Dilibertos' love of food, wine and song is sure to make their tasting room a delicious and entertaining destination.

DUCK WALK and DUCK WALK NORTH
It’s been more than a dozen years since Herodotus Damianos, M.D. purchased Southampton Winery, renamed it Duck Walk Vineyards, and replanted its neglected vines. This magnificent chateaux-like property has grown to 150 acres of vines planted on the North Fork and in the Hamptons. Many of Duck Walk’s additional plantings were new varieties to Long Island at that time. Pinot Grigio, Pinot Meunier, Semillon, Malbec and Sauvignon Blanc were added to the estate.
Duck Walk has been particularly noted for its reserve Merlots, winning many gold and double-gold medals in national competitions.
Another favorite wine, with an almost cult-like following, is the renowned Blueberry Port. Duck Walk believes this extremely rare dessert wine to be the only one produced in the United States.
Duck Walk’s vice president and general manager, Alex Damianos, has fashioned this property as a joyous location to visit and enjoy the complete Long Island wine experience. There are guided in-depth tours, as well as presentations and tastings of their international award-winning wines.

GRAPES OF ROTH
Roman Roth, critically acclaimed winemaker of Wölffer Estate in Sagaponack and consultant to many other Long Island producers, has released his own label, The Grapes of Roth. Each vintage will offer a limited production of hand-crafted wines.
The launch was greeted with high praise when two vintages of The Grapes of Roth Merlot received the highest scores of all N.Y. State wines in the June 2006 issue of Robert Parker 's influential Wine Advocate. The 2002 Merlot scored 92 and the 2001 Merlot 91. Both were singled out as outstanding and exceptional wines that will stand the test of time.
As a German-born winemaker with Riesling in his blood, Mr. Roth is always asked, Why the heck don t you make Riesling? In 2007, with one of the best vintages on L.I., he has finally created a Riesling he is proud to add to the Grapes of Roth label. It will be released in April and is expected to receive outstanding reviews.
Mr. Roth's aim is to create the East Coast's most sought-after wines and to further establish Long Island as a region that can produce wines of outstanding quality. Only 200 cases were made of the 2002 Merlot and 270 of the 2007 Riesling both crafted in a very traditional style. Mr. Roth believes that with the best fruit handled with meticulous attention, a passionate approach and years of experience, he can make a wine that stands up to the best in the world.
The Grapes of Roth label honors Mr. Roth's father, Remigius Roth, who studied as a cooper and winemaker. He's pictured during his apprentice years in 1945. The Riesling label features his mother, Rosa Roth, a vivacious advocate of good food and wine.

HARBES VINEYARDS
For over 12 generations the Harbes family has been tilling the fertile soils of Long Island and it has been their ability to find new ways to use agricultural resources that has helped them thrive in a rapidly changing world. Although better know for super-sweet corn and family events such as the Fall Pumpkin Festival and Sunday Fun Days, the harbes Family began a promising venture with wine in 2003.
In 2003 the vineyard was planted on a boulder-strewn, south-facing hill near the coast of Long Island Sound. On the surface is fine sandy loam, but underneath is a layer of rocks and silt, ideal for producing the finest vinifera grapes on Long Island.
With the careful attention of vineyard manager Edward Harbes IV and the expertise of wine maker Kareem Massoud of Paumanok Vineyards, the vines are producing among the most promising wines on the North Fork. The Harbes family strives to capture the best of farm and family and welcome you to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

JAMESPORT VINEYARDS
Jamesport Vineyards is a father/son collaboration that began at Early Rising Farm in Cutchogue. The first vines were planted on the family’s 60-acre Cutchogue estate in 1981, making them among the oldest on the North Fork. Varieties planted include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. All have been producing award-winning wines since the mid ’80s.
In 1986, Ron Sr. acquired the 150-year-old barn that houses the Jamesport winery and tasting room, offering a blend of old-world charm and new-world technology. Son Ron Jr., who manages the vineyards, strongly believes in sustainable practices that minimize the use of chemicals in the vineyard and winery, allowing greater control of the finished product.
Ron Goerler Jr., in consultation with veteran winemaker John Levenberg, sculpts the Goerler family’s fruit into its critically acclaimed wines.

THE LENZ WINERY
Lenz is one of the oldest wineries on the East End. Founded in 1978, it is now owned and operated by English-born Peter Carroll and his wife, Deborah.
With Sam McCullough in the vineyards and Eric Fry in the winery, over the last decade Lenz has consistently produced wines that define the region's potential.
Their meticulous attention to the vines, using a different vineyard-management program for each grape variety, provides the raw materials needed in the winery for Eric to
create critically acclaimed chardonnays, gewürztraminers, merlots, cabernets and sparkling wines.
Lenz pioneered the use of blind tastings to show how well its wines' and the region's compare with the best from France. Recently, professional tasters scored
various wines from vintages ranging back to 1993 at Manhattan's New York Yacht Club. Lenz brought 24 wines and the rest were from three Bordeaux châteaux. Lenz ranked

THE OLD FIELD
Start east, go west! The Old Field Vineyards, the easternmost vineyard and winery on the North Fork, is a “must start here” for your visit to the Eastern Long Island wine trails, founded in 1974 during the advent of the region’s vinifera wine-growing revolution. Christian and Rosamond Phelps Baiz are the fourth generation of their family to farm and preserve this historic agricultural site. “The Old Field,” first referenced in Southold Town records in the mid 1660s, was actively farmed by Native Americans for more than 2,000 years before the arrival of the first European settlers from New England in 1640.
The Old Field Vineyards is led by the only mother-daughter vineyard-manager team on Long Island. Rosamond and Perry oversee the growing of both Burgundian and Bordeaux-style wines, including one of America’s best-rated Pinot Noir Sparkling Wines, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and sometimes a red Pinot Noir. A family-run farm for five generations, today The Old Field Vineyards is the oldest vineyard continuously run by the same family on Long Island.

Charles was born in Lebanon to a family of hoteliers and restaurateurs, and Ursula in Germany to a family with a long tradition of winemaking. A mutual love for fine wine led them to the North Fork.
Together with their three sons, they oversee every aspect of viticulture and winemaking at Paumanok. The Massouds' meticulous canopy management and a thorough fruit-thinning regimen consistently yield ripe, high-quality grapes. As in the Old World, the same people who grow the grapes craft the wine. The goal is "to make the wine in the vineyard" and let the terroir express itself.
The hallmark of Paumanok wines is their authenticity and purity, genuine varietal character, and their remarkable acid balance. At Paumanok, the Old World is born again in the New World, both in wine and in spirit.

PECONIC BAY WINERY
Located on a charming, turn-of-the-century farm in the heart of Cutchogue, this “boutique” farm winery typically bottles less than 6,000 cases of classic European varietals annually. The wines are 100% estate-grown, and several of Peconic Bay’s wines have taken New York’s top prize in winemaking. Small-batch wines are crafted in a 100-year-old renovated barn; tastings and sales are offered in a small, Dutch Colonial-style barn. The winery is enjoying the rewards of first-rate vineyard management and uncompromising winemaking since Ursula and Paul Lowerre purchased it in 1999. Summer 2006 brought terrific recognition to the L.I. wine region from the world’s leading wine authority, Robert Parker Jr. The Wine Advocate’s David Schildknecht rated Peconic Bay’s 2001 Merlot at 88. The 2005 La Barrique Chardonnay was named “Best Wine Discovery (White)” at the Wine Literary Awards in California and “Best Oaked Chardonnay” at the 2007 N.Y. Wine & Food Classic.
Peconic Bay Winery is known for its informative delivery of courteous, friendly service; come during the week and you might just have the staff all to yourself. Tastings are $12, $9 or $6 (reserve and non-reserve wines). Weekend tours every hour 12-2 p.m. and alternate-Wednesday winemaker tours May 14-Sept. 3 (see Web site for more details). The winery is open year-round.

PELLEGRINI VINEYARDS
Bob Pellegrini's graphic design background can be seen in every element of Pellegrini Vineyards, from the clean lines and classic proportions of the winery to award-winning wine labels.
Bob and Joyce, a retired schoolteacher, bought the former Island Vineyards in 1991. Having mature vines allowed them to soon bottle their first vintage, with award-winning results that continue.
Australian-born winemaker Russell Hearn credits the owners' commitment to quality and willingness to cede responsibility to others. Pellegrini employs dense vine spacing and careful canopy management.
The spotless production center, partly open to view, combines high-tech stainless steel and computers with Old World oak-barrel aging. The philosophy is minimal manipulation, with many wines left unfiltered to retain integrity of the fruit.
Newly planted merlot, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc vineyards ensure that Pellegrini Vineyards will long supply quality wines.

PINDAR VINEYARDS
The excitement started more than 28 years ago when a Stony Brook physician, Herodotus “Dan” Damianos, purchased the 36-acre Krupski farm along with its vintage barn dating back to the 1840s. Today, Pindar Vineyards in Peconic, named for the Greek poet from 500 B.C., is the oldest continuous family-owned winery on Long Island. The 1840s barn houses a very active winery and tasting room, where visitors are presented with some of the most beautiful food- and people-friendly wines on Long Island.
On weekends, in season, join your hosts for a guided tour of the winery. Hundreds of acres are planted in Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewürztraminer and 15 other grape varieties such as Pinot Meunier, Petit Verdot, Viognier and Syrah, to name a few. The winery produces a special reserve called “Sunflower” Chardonnay; Mythology, a meritage; and Late Harvest Gewürztraminer.
With the vineyards under the direction of son Pindar Damianos, and the wine under
the direction of son Jason Damianos, it’s easy to see the family’s dedication to this
business. Their reverence for it shines through the magnificent 6,317-piece Tiffany-style stained-glass window located in the
tasting room.

PUGLIESE VINEYARDS
Pat and Ralph Pugliese "retired" to Cutchogue in 1980. They had a couple of acres to spare, so Ralph planted grapevines, thinking he'd sell the grapes to the new wineries.
But he'd been making wine with his father and uncles since he was 10, and the temptation was too great.
Pugliese is one of the smaller vineyards, and the family likes it that way: small and friendly. Ralph has been known to take unsuspecting guests on an impromptu tour of the
champagne cellar, and Pat hand-paints the champagne bottles. The tasting room walls are graced by the stunning local landscape photography of Ralph Pugliese Jr.
Some unusual wines are made here: Sparkling merlot, for instance, and a late-harvest wine made with a native New York grape, niagara. Past awards include a Best of Show for the
1997 Blanc de Blanc at the L.A. County Fair competition and a gold medal for the '99 Raffaello White Port at the San Diego National Wine Competition.
The 2000 Late Harvest Riesling and 1999 Porto Bello are recent medalists.

RAPHAEL
Established in 1996, Raphael was born from the vision of owner John Petrocelli, who named the winery in honor of his father and continues a centuries-old tradition of winemaking. The Petrocelli family strives to produce some of Long Island's finest wines by combining New World advances with Old World tradition.
Winemaker Richard Olsen-Harbich and vineyard manager Steve Mudd aim for the ultimate expression of the North Fork's soil and microclimate through small production and artisanal practices.
Attention to detail and devotion to quality inform every aspect of grape growing and winemaking, from sustainable vineyard practices through rigorous crop thinning and 100% hand harvesting. All of Raphael's wines are estate grown and bottled.
Italian monasteries inspired the winery's Mediterranean design, while the winemaking facility incorporates modern technology with such traditional practices as a five-ton wooden basket press. The winery opened in 2001 and produces about 5,000 cases a year.

SCAROLA VINEYARDS
Scarola Vineyards is a small wine producer dedicated to honoring and sustaining a family tradition begun generations ago in Bari, Italy, a port city on the Adriatic Sea, where Frank Scarola’s ancestors toiled as farmers and winemakers. In 1947, his father, Cosimo, came to the U.S., where a view of the New York City skyline through an arched window in the Great Hall at Ellis Island promised freedom and a better life. A representation of that window appears on Scarola Vineyards’ wine label, its gold background symbolizing Cosimo Scarola’s belief that America was the land of golden opportunity.
Over 60 years later, inspired by his father’s traditions, Frank Scarola is fulfilling his dream of producing delicious wines from grapes grown on the beautiful North Fork of Long Island, where European vines flourish. Scarola wines are hand-crafted with care and passion, and are meant to be shared by family and friends at a common table, in the Scarola family spirit of “la masseria,” the small family farm.
Scarola Vineyards makes only 500 cases a year. The wines are available at a number of fine restaurants and wine shops in the New York City/Long Island area and can also be purchased through the Web site.

SHINN ESTATE
Shinn Estate Vineyards has a working philosophy of low-impact, sustainable farming. Innovative soil-building techniques and "extreme viti-culture" partner to create consistently balanced fruit vintage to vintage. The crop is hand harvested at extremely low yields to produce fruit-driven wines with long aging potential.
Weekend vine-yard walks address sustainable farming practices and the growing cycle of the vines. The 22 acres focus on densely spaced merlot and small amounts of sauvignon blanc. Additional plantings include blending components of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, petit verdot, malbec and pinot blanc.
The winery also offers Shinn Estate Farmhouse, the first bed and breakfast on a vineyard site on Long Island. A historic homestead, Shinn Estate Farmhouse presents its guests with the tranquility of a farm environment paired with the cachet of lodging at a world-class winery.

SPARKLING POINTE
Sparkling Pointe arose from Cynthia and Tom Rosicki’s love of romance, the country life and Champagne. All the joys of their life together have been celebrated with a toast of the seductive, bubbly beverage. As residents and lovers of the North Fork who witnessed the birth and growth of Long Island’s wine region, they decided to combine their passions in Sparkling Pointe, the only producer in New York dedicated entirely to sparkling wine.
In 2003, they purchased land on Route 48 in Southold, where Steve Mudd planted and continues to cultivate the finest Pinot Noir, Meunier and Chardonnay – the classic varietals of French Champagne.
The next step was finding a winemaker. Steve Mudd told them there was only one choice: Gilles Martin, who once worked for a major French Champagne house and has made still and sparkling wines on the North Fork for many years.
Sparkling Pointe’s first releases – 2004 Brut and 2004 Topaz Imperial – have won praise from critics, and Topaz Imperial was named Best Sparkling Wine in the 2008 Wine Literary Awards. All of Sparkling Pointe’s wines are made by the traditional French Méthode Champenoise. A summer 2009 opening is planned for a wine center designed by Cutchogue architect Nancy Steelman.

VINEYARD 48
In 2005 Rose Pipia purchased Bidwell Vineyards, planted in 1982, making Vineyard 48 one of the islandÕs earliest vineyards. Today Rose is fulfilling her dream. Born in the scenic hillside village of Caltabellotta, Sicily, Rose vividly remembers the love her father had for the family vineyard. It is with that same love and dedication that Rose and her son Joseph approach their commitment to producing great wines from the unique North Fork terroir.
The winery produces estate-bottled wines of richness, complexity and elegance, while being food friendly. Their reserve chardonnays and reserve cabernets are world class. They recently released 2005 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is the first of the eagerly awaited 2005 reds.

WöLFFER ESTATE
The talent behind the critically acclaimed Wölffer Estate wines belongs to German winemaker Roman Roth, whose experience blends wine cultures on three continents.
In 1992 he became the first winemaker at what was then the mere startup of a winery, Sagpond Vineyards. Encompassing 50 acres today, Wölffer is an American winery with
a decidedly European character, in its spirit and its wines.
Wölffer wines embody the Hamptons Appellation as well as a classical style of winemaking, with a rich concentration of fruit and lively acidity born of the unique terroir similar
to some conditions in Bordeaux. Wines are made for longevity with a depth that improves with age. Mr. Roth, vineyard manager Richard Pisacano and the rest of the staff regard
themselves as the custodians of the vines, with hands-on care from planting to growing to the hand-picking of grapes. This approach can mean sacrificing up to 40 percent of the
grapes during growing to concentrate plant energy and nutrition on the most promising fruit.
Twilight Thursdays: Live music, wines by the glass and complimentary artisanal cheese. Year-round, 5-7:30 p.m. Visit our new boutique for all things wine and great gifts.
