Sept. 11 memorial for Suffolk victims

Lt. Peter Martin of Miller Place is one of seven local residents remembered at the county's new Sept. 11 memorial in Hauppauge. Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy, at a ceremony Thursday, called the memorial "a place for peaceful and somber contemplation."
Thursday in Hauppauge, county officials and surviving family members marked the eighth anniversary of the attacks by dedicating the new "Gardens of Remembrance" memorial and reading all 178 names aloud.
"While none of us can ever forget the events of Sept. 11, it is important that we create a special place where we can remember the fallen and console their families," County Executive Steve Levy said in a statement issued prior to the event.
The memorial, located off Veterans Highway near the H. Lee Dennison Building, features individual glass panels containing the names of each victim. The panels "are arranged to enclose a forever-wild garden growing within," officials said.
The memorial includes panels for victims Kevin Williams of Shoreham, a bond salesman at Sandler O'Neill; JoAnne Ahladiotis of Rocky Point, a manager for the financial services company eSpeed; William Fallon Jr. of Coram, an assistant vice president and technical support manager for eSpeed; Wading River resident James Cappers, an executive with the Marsh and McLennan financial services firm; Lt. Peter Martin of Miller Place, a fireman with FDNY Rescue 2 and the Miller Place Fire Department; Joseph Romagnolo of Coram, a telephone technician at Cantor Fitzgerald; Ana Fosteris of Coram, an insurance broker at Aon.
