Norberg, DeRosa win 5K
25th annual SWR 5K draws 200-plus runners

Shoreham-Wading River graduate Sean Norberg won the 5K in 17:08.
When Sean Norberg looked back on his running career at Shoreham-Wading River, he remembered how in any given race he could be first or seventh. It was a testament to the team's depth, which helped the Wildcats become one of the top cross country teams in the state.

Norberg, the winner of the Shoreham July 4 5K Saturday morning, was a key member of the 2007 Wildcats. In the division championship he was the second fastest Wildcat behind Bobby Andrews and 10th overall in the county.

"We were all so equal and deep," Norberg said.

Miller Place graduate Christina DeRosa was a repeat winner in the SWR 5K.
On a warm, sunny Saturday morning Norberg cruised to the top finish of the annual 5K in Shoreham in 17 minutes, 8 seconds. It was his third time running the 5K. Two years ago he finished fourth overall.

Norberg, a sophomore, will run for Lock Haven University in the fall after transferring from East Stroudsburg.

"I come back and run with the guys over the summer because everyone's going to different schools," Norberg said. "It's a team we won states with last year so it's nice."

Norberg was one of more than 200 runners to compete in the 25th annual race, which for the first time included a 1-mile race just for kids 12 and under. There was also a 1-mile race for anyone 13 and over. Proceeds for the race go toward a scholarship fund.

At Lock Haven Norberg said he hopes to help the team win a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) title.

"I'm going to run the steeplechase in the spring," he said.

Christina DeRosa of Sound Beach was a repeat winner in the 5K. DeRosa was the champion two years ago and reclaimed her title by finishing in 18:12.

Since graduating from the University of Massachusetts in 2008, where she was a standout runner, DeRosa has completed a one-year nursing program at Stony Brook.

"Right now I'm just getting back into racing," she said.

DeRosa missed the 5K last year when her season at UMass carried into June. She said she needed a long break afterward.

DeRosa, who set the Atlantic 10 Championship record in the 10,000 meter in 2007, said she plans on continuing running in a club.

"As far as summer goes I plan on running the Long Island women's one," she said. "I've never done that before."

A Miller Place graduate, DeRosa is familiar with the kind of hills running on the North Shore can present. She said she ran a 5K in Sayville recently and finished in around 17:44 on a flat course.

"This is challenging," she said. "I'm from Sound Beach so I'm surrounded by hills."

Other winners were Michael Peraza of Shoreham (5:03) and Jaclyn Milillo of Wading River (7:14) in the one-mile 13-and-over race. In the 12-and-under race Matt Gladysz of Wading River was first (6:01) and Caitlyn Clinton of Cabot, Ark., was second (6:10).
