Fishing Report
Fluke season closed until July 3
  0 comments below

Stan Hentschel at the Rocky Point Fishing Stop called the whole North Shore area "porgy city" with only "slow" action on local bluefish. The buoy lines, Buoys Nine and 11, have been producing some nice stripers, "nothing gigantic, but very good." Local keeper fluke run around six pounds, but the season is now closed until July 3.

John at Miller Place Bait and Tackle suggests that anglers seeking large scup try the rock piles off Mount Sinai, He's weighed bass to 30 pounds regularly and saw fish to 20 on Sunday. Best action Sunday morning was on clams while diamond jigs produced good catches on Friday. Area blues tend to be cocktails.

The newly arrived open boat out of Riverhead, the Zephyr, had a successful couple of weeks on striped bass, bluefish and weakfish in the Peconics. The boat sails from its Town Creek site behind the Aquarium Fridays through Mondays at 8 a.m. and again at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday afternoons. For reservations, call 831-4992. The Internet report posted for Sunday by Captain Larry Osit described a limit of large porgies for all on board on a single anchor drop.

On Friday, the Celtic Quest out of Port Jefferson pushed east to find summer flounder to seven pounds on the morning trip and managed 30 keepers. Then the boat went inshore for jumbo scup. The afternoon trip (4 p.m.) produced scup limits for all 25 anglers with the porgies stacked up tight to the beaches. Some fine sea bass were in the mix, too.

The last weekday fluke trip all the way to the East End took place on Thursday under tough conditions. An easterly wind produced fast drifts. Nevertheless, some 70 fluke were taken, of which 16 were keepers to six pounds.
