Bill Park of Manorville used an outside pole starting position and a first-lap caution flag to his advantage Saturday night on the way to his first win of 2009 in a 35-lap NASCAR modified feature at Riverhead Raceway. Three of the seven main events on the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series program were not determined until the final lap.
Park, the defending modified champion, held off a challenge by Justin Bonsignore of Holtsville to secure his 28th career victory at Riverhead Raceway. "We had a good car tonight, better than last week for sure," said Park.
Bonsignore was second. He was followed, in order, by Chuck Steuer of Bohemia, Wayne Anderson of Yaphank and John Fortin of Holtsville.
The 25-lap late model feature event was not decided until the white-flag lap when Kevin Metzger of Massapequa made an inside pass of leader Scott Kulesa of Georgetown, Mass., to score the thrilling win. It was Metzger's 11th career win. Peter Eriksen of Baldwin took third.
It's 96 wins and counting for Roger Maynor of Bay Shore in figure eight competition where he is 3 for 3 this season. Arne Pedersen of Moriches settled for second, and Ralph Tasso of Bohemia placed third.
The defending charger champion, Chris Turbush of Riverhead, is rolling in the right direction, winning a 30-lap contest for his second victory in a row. Chris McGuire of Shirley finished second, with Tom Anderson of Medford making a late-race charge for third.
The best last lap of the evening belonged to the blunderbust division, which saw a final lap with three lead changes before Rob Bader of Holtsville drove home the winner in a thriller. The 20-lap tilt was a non-stop affair that left Terry Stiles of Rocky Point second and Tom Pickerell of Huntington third.
Danny Grennan of Glen Cove won a 20-lap super pro trucks feature. Grennan ended up in victory lane for the 22nd time in his career, ahead of second-place Lou Maestri of Deer Park and third-place John Denniston of Westbury.
The final race of the night brought more last-lap drama as Shawn Wanat of Riverhead won a 60-lap, six-cylinder enduro. Christian Conklin of Flanders had a career night with a second-place finish. Bob Haeger of Hampton Bays grabbed third.
