HAUPPAUGE--A Middle Island man survived a two-car crash that claimed the life of a Medford woman on the Long Island Expressway Thursday, Suffolk police said.
Arthur Edouard, a 20-year-old college student from Middle Island, was driving a 1996 Nissan on the west side of the Long Island Expressway, when it was struck by a car driven by Kaitlyn Viola at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday, police said.
The 18-year-old woman, who was on her way to beauty school in Hauppauge, lost control of her 2000 Hyundai on Expressway Drive North near Blydenburgh Road and crossed three lanes of traffic, striking Mr. Edouard's car before finally coming to a rest at a roadside tree, police said.
Det. Lt. Robert Edwards, commanding officer of the fourth squad detectives, said Mr. Edouard's car was clipped by Ms. Viola's car and then spun around in the opposite direction during the crash. Both cars were found close to each other, he said.
Ms. Viola was transported by police helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center where she was pronounced dead shortly thereafter, police said. Mr. Edouard was not injured in the crash, police said.
Det. Lt. Edwards said it is unclear what caused Ms. Viola to lose control of her car; a matter that is still under investigation.
Mr. Edouard could not be reached for comment by presstime. Ms. Viola's family was also not available for comment before the publishing of this story.
Both cars were impounded for standard safety checks. Police are asking anyone with information about this crash to call Fourth Squad detectives at (631) 854-8452.
