Who's your person of the year?

We know 2009 isn't over yet, but it's never too early to start thinking about the best residents in SunLand.
It's at this time every year that we use this space to ask our readers to help us select candidates for our People of the Year issue. In our first issue of 2010, we will once again name a civic leader, educator, business person, public servant and person of the year.
We would like you, our readers, to again be a part of the process.
Last year, you helped us select a diverse group of worthy recipients, including a history teacher who makes the past come to life in his classroom, a business owner who goes above and beyond to ensure his community is safe, a pair of world class swimmers, and an advocate for all things Sound Beach.
In the past we've also honored a field hockey coach, a principal, a priest, a pizza parlor owner and several Town Board members.
We're looking for five people who are simply the best at what they do. We're asking you for help.
We want to hear about people like the teacher who went out of her way to help you become a better student or the business owner who is constantly giving back to his community.
The hamlets we cover are loaded with residents who work tirelessly to make them better places. We have a growing list of people who are more than qualified to earn such an honor. That list could never be too long.
We realize there are a great many people doing big things in their community who don't want the spotlight. As a result, the work they do is hardly noticed. That's who we're talking about.
Do you know that person? Let us know.
Nominations can be mailed to The North Shore Sun, P.O. Box 5539, Rocky Point, NY 11778. Or you can e-mail the editor at gparpan@northshoresun.com. Faxes are OK. Our fax number is 744-2640. A phone call is fine, too. The number is 631-744-0404, ext. 11; just ask for Grant. Let us know why this person is deserving, and please give us your phone number for follow-up discussions.
All correspondence will be kept confidential, so the persons nominated don't even have to know you are singling them out. Nominations should be submitted by Dec. 15.
We plan to announce our People of the Year in the edition of Friday, Jan. 8, 2010. We'll do our best to keep our awards hush-hush until the paper comes out.
We encourage you to become involved in the selection process. Practice your own random act of kindness by showcasing a friend or neighbor.
