Texas fugitive picked up in Rocky Point deli raid
Accused murderer arrested in code violation raid
  19 comments below

Rodolfo Morales
Local authorities investigating resident complaints about illegal activity on Broadway in Rocky Point cracked more than just a gambling operation when they moved in on Ramirez Deli Sept. 24.

A man wanted for murder in Texas was among three men arrested in a joint raid by the Brookhaven Town Law Department and Suffolk County Police. Law investigators and officers from the 7th Precinct crime section and COPE were preparing to execute a search warrant at Ramirez Deli, which is located at 53 Broadway, shortly after 8:30 p.m., when they saw a man with what appeared to be marijuana, according to investigators. The man later turned out to be 27-year-old Rodolfo Morales, a Port Jefferson Station resident wanted for the murder of a man in Texas, investigators said.

Brookhaven officials said that once investigators and police were inside the deli building, they found a dice table, gambling, drugs and alcohol, and a large amount of cash. The owner of the deli, Ramon Rodriguez, 46, of Port Jefferson Station, was charged with second-degree promoting gambling and possession of a gambling device. He was issued 14 appearance tickets for not having building permits for the interior alterations of the deli area, the alteration and occupancy of the second room attached to the deli and the illegal occupancy of the basement area, and eight fire code violations, investigators said. Also issued was a cease and desist order precluding Mr. Rodriguez from operating the deli until the code violations are corrected and the fire marshal completes an inspection of the premises. The owner of the property, James Blakeney of Apache Junction, Ariz., will also be issued with summonses, investigators said.

Det. Lt. Gail Marrero, commanding officer of the 7th Precinct's detective squad, said that when Mr. Morales was detained he identified himself by the wrong name, claiming to be a man named "Jose Miranda." He was then properly identified following a fingerprint scan, and found to have an active warrant for his arrest by Houston Police on a charge of murder, she said. Houston Police spokesman Keith Smith confirmed the police department does have an active warrant for a man named Rodolfo Morales, who is charged with murder, however, the homicide division has not confirmed that this is the same man arrested in Rocky Point. The murder charge, he said, is the result of a shooting death that followed an argument about money. If Mr. Morales proves to be the man sought by Houston Police, Mr. Smith explained, the Harris County Sheriff's Office will handle the extradition proceedings.

Mr. Morales was also charged with second-degree forgery and fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana. He pleaded not guilty during his arraignment Saturday in 1st District Court in Central Islip. Mr. Morales is being held at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Riverhead in lieu of $500,025 or $1 million bond. Although he will have representation provided by the Legal Aid Society, Mr. Morales has not been assigned a permanent attorney. The Legal Aid Society declined to comment on the case, as is their policy.

Rafael Torres, 43, was charged with second-degree obstructing governmental administration because authorities say he interfered with their investigation. Mr. Rodriguez and Mr. Torres were released on their own recognizance and will be arraigned on a future date.

Neither man could be reached for comment by presstime.

Brookhaven Councilwoman Jane Bonner's office received numerous complaints from residents alleging illegal activity prior to the arrests. After news broke of the raid and the collar of a fugitive wanted for murder, Ms. Bonner said she was elated and credited both the investigators from the town and the police officers for a "job well done."

"This is the first step toward taking back Broadway," she said.

Likewise, Legis. Daniel Losquadro (R-Shoreham) shared similar sentiments.

"I think it's safe to say this place is out of business," he said.

THE FISHERMEN LOVE JANE BONNER : 10/9/2009
To the person who posted the big laugh on 10/6/09 in response to the claims that the fishermen and fisherwomen of Council District 2, supported Jane Bonner in the primary and will continue to do so in the general election! I am glad you had a good laugh, but please do not fall out of your chair. John Edwards and the left-wing trial lawyers will solicit you to sue the manufacturer of the chair for not providing you with seat belts in case you laugh too hard. If the fishermen oppose Jane, why did she get 78% of the vote in the primary? Liberal Lesko and Leonard supporters, such as you, are attempting to convince fishermen and fisherwomen that Jane is not their friend and their strongest voice on the Town Board. They know better. They love Jane and Jane loves them. Jane is the champion of the rights of recreational fishermen and fisherwomen. Her victory is assured. I hope Lesko, Leonard and Laufer are paying you well for your time.

JANE IN A LANDSLIDE : 10/9/2009
Everybody should know that the lengthy comment of 10/6/09 entitled "Bye Bye Jane Bye Bye" has been posted verbatim for the last two weeks in connection with other columns in this newspaper. The person posting the comment has not been gathering any information. It is an anti Jane Bonner rant posted by a loyal supporter of Mark Lesko and his puppet John Leonard. It is not based on independent sureveys and non partisan studies. It is the political propaganda that you would expect to read in a brochure published by liberals Lesko, Leonard and Laufer. There are no independent, non-partisan studies that have been completed by anybody that pretend to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of both Jane Bonner and liberal John Leonard. Jane has a record of outstanding service to the community. John is a newcomer who will serve only Lesko and Laufer. Jane will win in a landslide.

msg to bye bye jane. ZZZZZ u have 2 much time on ur hands

Bye Bye Jane Bye Bye : 10/6/2009
No way to Jane : 9/30/2009 Over the past two years, we have been gathering information for a vast number of categories, so that we may continue to inform our and surrounding communities with fair and accurate information on important issues at different times. As you well know, Fairfield Properties announced that they would cancel their plans for their proposed Rocky Point PDD. At that time they announced that in two weeks they would submit plans for 47 single family homes (as-of-right) to be built on the property they own behind the Rocky Point McDonalds restaurant on Rte. 25A. At that time there was speculation that they would not make any move until after the elections. That announcement from Fairfield was 11 weeks ago and the elections are now upon us. As you may have already read, several of our elected officials are still spending hundreds of thousands of our tax dollars on what they call Corridor studies, Hamlet studies, Feasibility studies, etc. We believe that these Studies all point in the same direction; to facilitate the efforts of developers in proliferating their projects throughout or communities. One of our elected officials, Jane Bonner is running for reelection as our Councilwoman. Her district includes Rocky Point and several surrounding communities. Prior to running for our representative on the Brookhaven Town Council, Jane Bonner held a position on the Rocky Point School Board. According to the School Board Minutes, while she was on the school board, Jane negotiated with Fairfield Properties for a swimming pool for Rocky Point. This proposed swimming pool was part of a “community benefit” that we would receive in exchange for a zoning change so that Fairfield could build it’s dense project in our town. In other words, “What will it take to ‘buy’ the school board’s support”. Had it not been for vehement opposition to the Fairfield project by Rocky Point Residents Action Group and along with comunity oposition to Fairfield, I believe she would still be negotiating for the pool or for some other community benefit. Jane Bonner is presently endorsing another corridor study for the area along Route 25A through her district. This corridor study will cost hundreds of thousands of TAX DOLLARS. Our feeling on this is: If a corridor study is in favor of a sewer district, anywhere in the study, it will pave a path for Fairfield Properties to resubmit their proposal. Don’t forget the headlines 11 weeks ago. “we will submit a plan for 47 homes within two (2) weeks. Those plans have yet to materialize and have not been submitted to the Town of Brookhaven. And Jane Bonner has been silent on this from the beginning. Until the recent opposition to Fairfield, Jane Bonner was in our estimation “pro” Fairfield. While she openly opposed the Tall Grass PDD in Shoreham and the development of 60+ acres in Miller Place (single family houses on one acre lots would destroy the rural downtown feeling of Miller Place) she only stated that “I will do what the people want” when it came to the Rocky Point Fairfield PDD. On another front, while it is perfectly legal, moral, and ethical to accept campaign contributions from whomever you wish; the consequences attached to those contributions should be realized. When it comes to voting on a proposed project involving a campaign contributor, one should remove themselves from voting on that project. In no way shape or form do we allege and wrong-doings of any kind, but we do feel you should know who some of her contributors are. 1. John J. LaValle “LaValle said he plans to abstain from discussing and deciding the (Fairfield) matter because of his political and prior business relationships with Broxmeyer (the owner of Fairfield)."I never interact with their [Fairfield] applications," said LaValle, who at one point served as Broxmeyer's attorney. "I completely take myself away from the situation. I think that's extremely appropriate because I wouldn't want any wrong perception out there." (Newsday June 11, 2001) KUDOS to you Mr. LaValle. 2. “Friends Of John J. Lavalle”- contributions of $1,500.00 3. Jane Bonner received $500.00 of campaign contributions from Fairfield. With the election upon us, think carefully about all of our candidates….we would not presume to tell you how to vote…..these are important times in Rocky Point….think carefully and choose people that represent us. Rocky Point Residents Action Group

hahahahahahaaa : 10/6/2009
"Jane was supported by the fishermen and fisherwomen in the primary. They will support her in the general election! The fishermen love Jane Bonner. " Thank you for the laugh. I was not having the greatest day, however your rediculous comment almost made me fall out of my chair laughing. There isn't a fisherman in the district that will be voting for Jane Bonner. She is still trying to undermine recreational fishing efforts within the Town fo Brookhaven. The fisherman are very well aware of this and will never vote for Crookhaven Jane.

no more bodega? : 10/6/2009
Folks we're missing the true crisis at hand... Rocky Point now has no hispanic food option!!! Seriously though, I really hope this doesn't become just one more vacant storefront in downtown Rocky Point... hmm way to take back Broadway!

: 10/5/2009
Do you want to talk about a council person who does nothing? Look at the 4th district. Connie Careless Kepert. GH, Bellport, Farmingville are overrun with sex offenders, undocumented MEN ON THE CORNER, high rate of foreclosures and what does Connie Careless Kepert do about any of this? Oh, yea, she sponsors a Beach Day for Dogs at her Dog Park.

JANE BONNER IS A RELIGIOUS PERSON : 10/4/2009
I am totally disgusted with the person who commented that Councilwoman Jane Bonner "sleeps with the help." Jane is a devout person and very true to the values of her religion. She is a conservative woman of the highest principles and the highest integrity. You should be ashamed of your childish, vulgar and obscene comments right out of the liberal Democratic playbook. It is well known that it is the liberal Democrats who sleep with the help. Just look at David Letterman! He makes sexual jokes about the14 year old daugter of Sarah Palin, while at the same time, he sleeps with every staffter in sight. This is typical of so many liberal Democrats!

LIBERAL DEMOCRATS : 10/4/2009
I profoundly disagree with the person who made the following comment: "Today in Rocky Point we have murderers, rapists, gambling drug dens and child pornographers. What is wrong with our community?" There is nothing wrong with your community. Comments like these come from rich snobs who do not live in Rocky Point. They live in places like East Setauket (Mark Lesko), Mount Sinai (John Leonard) and Old Field (Marsha Laufer). Your community is not like Chicago (President Obama). There are problems in every community on Long Island, but there are also great assets which attract people to live here. Rocky Pont has beautiful becahes and beautiful homes. Real estate values fluctuate the same as every other community on Long Island. Be proud of your community. Do not tear it down. Support JANE BONNER for a bright future for Rocky Point! Do not support the liberal Leonards, Leskos and Laufer losers who look down on the people of Rocky Point.

The Fisherman and Jane : 10/4/2009
During the primary campaign this newspaper was deluged with vicious comments which claimed to be from fishermen who were singlehandidly going to defeat Jane Bonner. The primary results cl;early indicate that the negative comments were coming from one or two isolated left-wing extremists who posted their negative comments at the requests of John Leonard and Mark Lesko. Jane was supported by the fishermen and fisherwomen in the primary. They will support her in the general election! The fishermen love Jane Bonner. They know a friend when they see one. Stop posting these ludicrous comments. I hope Leonard and Lesko are paying you well for them.

THE FISHERMEN VOTE FOR JANE : 10/4/2009
Instead of celebrating a victory for law enforecement in Rocky Point, the liberal Democrats are seizing upon the this victory as opportunity to take some cheap shots at Councilwoman Jane Bonner. Jane supports law enforcement and will continue to back the men and women who brought us this great triumph. If you want more success against crime, support the candidate who has vowed to fight it and proves it with her public actions. That person is Jane Bonner.

waste : 10/4/2009
"Ms. Bonner said she was elated and credited both the investigators from the town and the police officers for a "job well done." " How long did it take for anything to be done? Jane has been looking the other direction the entire time. She does not want the presence of gang control police officers in town either. How about the incident at the tatoo parlor jane?! She must be too busy hiring family members and sleeping with the help. Oh thats right when she hired him he was just a friend. What a joke! She needs the boot out of office. VOTE ANYONE BUT JANE.

Get rid of Jane : 10/4/2009
Her lack of action is taking its toal on the community. She wasted alot of time, effort and money violating the rights of law abiding fisherman. Now look at the town.

: 10/3/2009
Jane Bonner once said that law abiding fisherman would be treated like criminals if they were caught fishing on public beaches. Maybe if she focused more on real problems and real criminals Rocky Point would be a much safer place today.

: 10/2/2009
Today in Rocky Point we have murderers, rapists, gambling, drug dens and child pornographers. What is wrong with our community?

: 10/2/2009
Dems are supported by ACORN. Talk about criminals. Jane Bonner works hard for her constituents! I hope that she wins. She deserves it.

JANE BONNER : 10/2/2009
Shame on the people who posted the last two comments! JANE BONNER is a "law and order" Conservative who favors cracking down on murderers, rapists and illegal aliens. She is not the Suffolk County Police Department, and if you are unhappy with the manner in which the police have rersponded to the problems in Rocky Point, call your County Police Commissioner and The County Executive. Jane Bonner has been putting pressure on them on behalf of her constituents in Council Disrtict 2. The problems on Boadway began long before Jane Bonner was first sworn in on January 1, 2008. They will be solved is she wins a scond term, especially if she wins by a landslide. If you vote for John Leonard, you are voting for liberalism, amnesty for illegal aliens and higher taxes. Be happy a muderer was caught. Most of these criminals vote for the left wing Democrats like Leonard and Lesko, because they know where their bread is buttered. Jane Bonner is the criminal's worst nightmare. She is the great right hope for all law abiding citizens.

: 10/2/2009
Ditto to the first comment. This has been going on for a long, long time...quality of life has gone downhill in Rocky Point since Jane was elected into District 2.

finally : 10/2/2009
It is about time something has been done. Jane has done nothing about it for how long?
