Mattituck/Greenport/Southold's Zach Branker, left, had a hold of Center Moriches' Will McBee during Friday's match. Branker won by a decision.
The Tuckers opened the season last Wednesday with a lopsided 56-13 nonleague loss at Kings Park. But two days later, the Tuckers rolled past the Center Moriches Red Devils, 44-23, in Mattituck.
"Realistically, Kings Park is one of the top 10 teams in Suffolk County," Dolson said. "Obviously, they beat us up. But we did a lot better against Center Moriches."
Ryan Connell (145 pounds), Sean Heaney (171) and Corey Best (189) had the Tuckers' only wins against the Kingsmen. Connell and Heaney won on decisions while Best pinned his opponent in the third period.
The Tuckers jumped off to a fast start against the Red Devils and kept rolling. Mynor Javier (103) and Tim Browne (112) of the Tuckers both won on first-period pins. Javier won in 44 seconds while Browne's match lasted 58 seconds.
"Mynor is a scrappy wrestler," Dolson said. "He is a freshman and is learning, so it was nice for him to get a victory. For Tim, he is a tough wrestler with good skills. He is getting better and better. We need these two kids to step up and get some wins for us."
For Branker, a junior, it was his first varsity win. "Zach is still learning," Dolson said. "But he is hard-working, and he looked real good in this match."
Dolson said Connell, Heaney and Best "are veterans that are plugging away and taking care of business."
The strength of this Tuckers team, Dolson said, is between 140 and 152 pounds, along with 171, 189 and 215.
"Those are our strongest weight classes," he said. "Down at the lower weights, we have some inexperience. Obviously, we could not handle Kings Park, but we bounced back nicely against Center Moriches. After two matches, we are right where we should be."
