Two Riverhead rowers bring home gold
  0 comments below

The Long Island scholastic men's basketball team lost, 72-70, to Hudson Valley in the silver-medal game of the recent Empire State Games at SUNY/Binghamton. Ryan Creighton of Greenport had eight points for Long Island. Creighton scored 22 points in an early-round win over Adirondack, then had 14 in a win over Hudson Valley and four in a loss to Western.

The Long Island scholastic women's basketball team did not win a medal. Emily Ianno of Cutchogue scored seven points in three games for Long Island.

Justin Rothman of Southold was part of the Long Island scholastic men's soccer team that lost to Hudson Valley, 4-2, in the gold-medal game to finish with a silver medal.

Klurissa Williams of Riverhead finished fifth in the open women's triple jump, covering 10.16 meters.

Corey Best of Mattituck took sixth in the scholastic men's Greco-Roman wrestling competition. Best won one of his three matches at 192 pounds. Ryan Connell of Mattituck went 1-3 in the scholastic men's freestyle competition.

The Mattituck/Greenport high school wrestling coach, Cory Dolson, called it a good experience for his wrestlers.

Dylan Gould and Ed O'Neill rowed to gold and bronze medals.
"This means a lot to wrestle in an elite tournament," Dolson said. "Some of the best wrestlers in the state take part in this. It is special, kind of a mini Olympics. This is a big step for them and will help get them ready for next season."

Caiti Derenze of Jamesport came in eighth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 8 minutes 25 seconds, and was 11th in the 800 in 2:35. Derenze was hampered by a quadriceps injury to her right leg that she sustained at a track camp. "Unfortunately," she said, "I was unable to run my best."

John Verderber of Aquebogue came in ninth in the scholastic men's pole vault. He did not clear the opening height.

In master's (35 and older) men's volleyball, John Czartosieski of Riverhead was part of Long Island's silver-medal winning team. Long Island lost to Hudson Valley, 25-18, 25-13, in the match for the gold medal. The Long Island team had knocked off the heavily favored Western team, 18-21, 21-19, 15-12, in the semifinals. "I really enjoyed the competitive atmosphere," said Czartosieski.
