Joan Carrick passed away peacefully at home in Southold on Sunday, Jan. 31, at 86 years of age. A former resident of Spring Hill, Fla., Joan had lived in Southold near her family for the past year.

The former Joan Messina was born on Aug. 11, 1923, in Brooklyn. Her parents were Santa (Larceri) Messina and Giachino Messina. She married Thomas Carrick at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Baltimore, Md., in 1942. She was widowed in 1945, and was predeceased by her six siblings.

Joan had one daughter, Joan Carrick Murray, who survives her, along with her son-in-law, Nick Murray. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Karen, Joan and Mark Murray, her grandson-in-law, David Dickerson, and two great-grandchildren, Rebecca and Will Dickerson. Her great-grandchildren thought she made the best meatballs in the world.

Visitation will be on Friday, Feb. 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, with interment on Saturday, Feb. 6, at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church cemetery. Donations in Joan's memory can be made to the Challenged Athletes Foundation at raceforareason.kintera.org/murrayfamilymemorial.
