Record blizzard gives way to sun
Storm of 2009 declared biggest 'ever' 16 comments below

The National Weather Service has declared the weekend's snow storm as the biggest of all time for Long Island, with measurements topping 26 inches at the agency's regional offices in Upton.
With snow starting about midday Saturday and tapering off early Sunday, it was the highest total for a singe storm since official record keeping started in 1949.
The previous record was 23 inches in 1978.
Most of the area's main roads were cleared by Monday's commute, though some drifting and blowing snow was reported by motorists. Plows were working throughout area subdivisions on Monday. The storm gave way to sun and dry weather, which should remain through much of the week, though Christmas Eve will bring with it colder weather.
Rain or a wintry mix is expected Christmas day, according to the National Weather Service.
We invite you to send your winter storm photos to us for a web slide show.

Save your attacks on Gio. The previous two highway superintendents weren't faced with a record blizzard and reduced staffs.
We should thank the department employees for their extended efforts during this horrendous storm.
Comments in an earlier story described one commercial plower doing a parking lot, with the snow instantly recovering the lot in his trail, and visibilty down to zero.
Second guessing and finger pointing is too easy.
Getting the job done under such conditions is hard.
OUTRAGED : 12/22/2009
Never been this disappointed in the town I was raised in..i'm disabled and live alone off of Roanoke Heights and thank God I and others in the area didn't need to call an ambulance as the roads have not even been plowed days later.
But yet I read no property taxes or tax breaks for Atlantis and a one bedroom apartment house on Peconic Ave that a newly elected official is involved in....
Nothing changes in Riverhead...same ole same ole backroom politics and the highway department boss is a total FAIL....
I miss Alex Horton...
We the residents are the suckers in this...as we allow this to go on and on and on ...all empty promises...if I was disabled I would leave Riverhead as I have lost all hope for it and the fools that promise things every election year and then never deliver
Snow's Aftermath : 12/22/2009
I am a Senior Citizen who is buried in my home with no way to get out in the event of an emergency. The snow is so deep on the walkway or driveway and especially at the curb where the snowplow left a tall mountain of snow. I called Town Hall for help yesterday and was told I need to call a private snow removal company. I have but no one returns those calls. Isn't there some agency I could call for help?

Great job on the roads? Are you kidding me its monday nite and still no plow on reeves ave .We were forced to close the restaurant and cancel a party due to the wonderful job done by Riverhead town. Thanks Gio and ther boys cost 10 employees a days wages plus the business another $2000 min in lost business. 4 years of this the whole town will look like downtown
Rhd Roads during snowstorm : 12/21/2009
I give the Department of Highways a lot of credit (as well as all of our Town employees who had to work through this storm), as they were faced with the largest snowfall on record for our town and much of LI in a 24 hour period.
Although they didn't get to plow my neighborhood until 3 p.m. Sunday, they have the unenvious task of having to tend to one the geographically largest towns on Long Island with a relatively small force.
Additionally, the sheer size and depths of this storm presented safety challenges for the Highway Department for them to ensure main roads were passable first and foremost, then get to the many side roads.
Though they worked around the clock through the weekend, they were still shoveling sidewalks and digging out Monday morning.
Pay it forward, people, and offer some thanks to Gio Woodson and his staff

Well, Village Green finally had it's first pass-bys (3) with one plow from noon - 2:30 Monday. I heard that Riverhead's highway dept ran out of budget $$ and does not allow anyone other than our Riverhead Hwy dept members to plow. Is this true ?Just how many drivers do we have ? Why couldn't we hire drivers from up-the-island to help us out last night or early today ? I do realize this was some storm - but if other towns could relatively dig themselves out quicker...why couldn't we ? Why didn't the town contact Channel 12 news & update its' residents, (who in fact, pay their salaries) instead of having us wonder what the HECK was going on? THANKS

I love the blizzard slideshow. Some of the pix are amazingly beautiful. I miss the snowfalls but not the cold, or the shoveling, or driving to and from work on snowy, slippery roads (hence my location now in SoCal). Surprised that this was the biggest snowfall ever. In the 50s and 60s we got some mighty wild blizzards and snow that swallowed up the cars. I still miss the East End and will always love it.

Gee, aren't we the lucky ones that we just voted the Highway superintendent in for a four year term. In four years everyone will forget how bad the roads were plowed on December 20, 2009. That is the problem with changing any term from 2 years to 4 years. All local elected officials should have to run for re-election every two years, NOT four....
sorry for riverhead : 12/21/2009
Southampton, Southold & Brookhaven towns were plowing side roads all through the storm. What happened to Riverhead?

Plow never arrived? : 12/20/2009
Is there anyone else, (or any other Riverhead town neighborhood road) never cleared by a plow yet ? It's now 3am Monday and the roads have never been plowed. It's almost as if we've been forgotten. Did this happen to you too ?
