Florentina Clark
Florentina Clark of Manhattan died July 19 at Jewish Home and Hospital Lifecare System there. She was 89.
She was born in Peconic on Jan. 11, 1919, to Benigno and Iolanthe DeJesus. After graduating as salutatorian in 1936 from Greenport High School, Ms. Clark attended New York University.
She and her husband, Keith, lived in Kingston, Jamaica, and Miami, Fla., before settling in Manhattan, where she worked as a private tutor for students of Spanish, Latin and French, family said.
In her free time, Ms. Clark enjoyed doing The New York Times crossword puzzle, reading, playing Scrabble, listening to jazz and following politics, said her sister Mercedez Alvarez of Greenport. "She was interested in all kinds of language and literature."
In addition to her "wonderful sense of humor," Ms. Clark had a keen sense of style and "was a gentle and gracious person," said her brother, Ramon DeJesus of Holbrook.
Predeceased by her husband, she is survived by, in addition to Ms. Alvarez and Ramon DeJesus, her siblings Carlos DeJesus, Dolores DeJesus and Iolanthe Mason, all of Greenport; Glenwood DeJesus of Connecticut; Anna Walker of Washington, D.C.; and Rosita Siklos of Brooklyn.
Family received visitors July 22 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport, where Pastor Beverly Furey presided over a funeral service on July 23. Interment followed at Sterling Cemetery, Greenport.
