WARRIORS 52, TUCKERS 39

ROCKY POINT -- The Mattituck Tuckers led for much of the game, but it's how a team finishes that counts, and it was the Comsewogue Warriors who finished strong last Thursday evening.

Mattituck played well in the Town of Brookhaven Summer League small schools boys' basketball game, but with only six players available, the Tuckers appeared to wear down and lost, 52-39, to a talented Comsewogue team. The win left Comsewogue sharing 2-0 records atop the league along with the Hampton Bays Baymen and Miller Place Panthers. Mattituck dropped to 0-2.

After a putback by Mattituck's Cody Huntley leveled the score at 38-38, Comsewogue put the game away by scoring the next 12 points. The first points of that decisive run came from a rare four-point play by Zachary Krischer. Keith Vigorito and A.J. Uhl followed that up with back-to-back three-point shots of their own; then a steal and a layup by Vigorito made it 50-38.

Connor Davis of Mattituck tried to maneuver toward the basket and under the reach of a Comsewogue player.
Krischer, who passed out five assists, finished with 14 points, as did Uhl. Uhl drained four three-pointers and Krischer dropped three as the Warriors shot 9 for 15 from three-point range. Krischer had struck for 25 points in Comsewogue's season-opening win over the Greenport Porters two nights earlier.

Steven Ascher of Mattituck, the game's high scorer with 19 points, canned four three-pointers. The Tuckers also received some good ball-handling from Thomas Ascher, Steven's brother, and nice rebounding from Huntley. Huntley came down with eight rebounds to go with his eight points, two steals and two blocks.

Although Mattituck led for much of the first 22-minute half -- twice by as many as 10 points -- Comsewogue showed the fortitude to charge back. A conventional three-point play by Ken Scotland enabled the Warriors to tie the score at 22-22 by halftime.

Comsewogue then started the second half in fine fashion, opening up with a 9-2 run for a 31-24 lead. But Steven Ascher scored 11 of Mattituck's next 13 points to put the Tuckers back in the game.

If Mattituck would have pressed at all Comsewogue would have ran them right out of the gym. Well see if they can play with Comsewogue in the playoffs. That is if they win their out bracket game. Comsewogue will be waiting for them with the 1 seed.

Mattituck : 7/4/2009
Who ever wrote that Comsewgue's comment is retarded b/c Mattituck only had 6 people. You cant run up and down the court and press all game with only 6 people. Only two returning varsity players were there. If Mattituck had there full roster it wouldnt even have been competition. Your lucky Cody and Steve didnt go off b/c they both could of easily dropped 25, especially since Steve was dropping 3's.

Comsewogue's chances : 7/3/2009
Comsewogue will be tough this year. They only had three starters at this game and played with many inexperienced JV players. Uhl and Krischer are both 3 year starters and are both capable of going for 25 a game. Every important piece of the playoff team from a year ago is back except for the PG but Uhl and Krisher will fill that hole easily, look for them to be at the top of Suffolk League V this season.
