Cupcake craze
Butta'Cakes open for biz on Main Street

Butta'Cakes owner Marc LaMaina sold out of cupcakes, made by pastry chef Christine Thompson (left), this past Friday, opening day for his new pastry shop on Main Street, Greenport. Mr. LaMaina, a Greenport native, moved from Wall Street to the village for the business venture.
"I said 'Butta'Cakes,' and everyone smiled," said the 28-year-old entrepreneur, whose dream has become reality in a space on Main Street owned by his family since 1908.
Mr. LaMaina opened the doors of Butta'Cakes Friday morning to a steady flow of grinning customers -- and sold out of cupcakes by 3 p.m.
Mattituck resident Barbara Radich, who works down the street at Preston's, Greenport's nautical giftware store, said that her chocolate-chocolate cupcake was "divine."
"And I'm approaching 50, so I know a lot about cupcakes," she said before taking another bite. Both Ms. Radich and coworker Marie Doroski of Cut¬chogue said they've been waiting for Butta'Cakes to open for months.
Mr. LaMaina got approval from the village last August to open his business -- and now, with Zeller's long-since closed and Southold's recently opened Blue Duck Bakery the nearest alternative for pastries, Butta'Cakes is the only bakery in Greenport.
Butta'Cakes sells individual cupcakes for $2.75 in a variety of flavors -- red velvet, vanilla butter cream, coconut cream and Belgian chocolate, to name a few -- and you can also pre-order cupcakes by the dozen, Mr. LaMaina said.
A dozen Butta'Cakes costs $30.
Love Lane Kitchen in Mattituck supplies Butta'Cakes with fresh-roasted Love Lane coffee beans, ground in-house. Breakfast and lunch menus, along with cheese and chocolate fondue and baked tapas, will soon be available.
Mr. LaMaina, who spent five years at PricewaterhouseCoopers in the city, said he'd been "planning his escape" from the industrial advisory giant months before the financial market meltdown.
"The crash was just another opportunity," he said. "I always wanted to open up a restaurant or something food-related."
Mr. LaMaina hired Christine Thompson, a 21-year-old student at Suffolk County Community College's Culinary Arts Program in Riverhead, as his pastry chef and his mother, Judy, as financial adviser.
With foot traffic on Main Street, Mr. LaMaina said he's sure that those velvety little cakes will be flying out the door all summer, just like they did all weekend.
"It was crazy," he said.

A friend of mine gave me one of these delightful cupcakes for my birthday. It was nicely packaged, but more importantly exceptionally delicious. Every bite was moist. The frosting was very light scrumptious. I checked out the website and this bakery is very appealing. I recommend this cupcake shop for any event.
I love those little cakes : 10/14/2009
I was recently at Butta' Cakes and had the lemon and coconut cupcake. The best I ever had. I will surely be back for some delicious cupcakes

Live in the upper east side and visited the NOFO for the wine. Gotta say Butta was the highlight of our trip. The cupcakes were the best I ever had. Chocolate turtle should be trademarked. The owner was a doll, even gave us a free bread! Will be back for FONDUE soon!!!

There is no way our cupcake was old! We bake from scratch every day!!! Frosting not sweet? Maybe your tastebuds are not functioning or you own a store in town that can't bake em' like we do. Come see me in person and we can discuss. Many thanks! Marc :)
