Deer in Love Lane store
The door was half-off   12 comments below

TIM KELLY PHOTO
A startled deer crashed through the front door of Bauer's Love Lane Shoppe in Mattituck Monday afternoon before racing to the back of the store, where it thrashed around before eventually being released out the back door.  Shop owner Lauretta Bauer is shown surveying the damage. See The Suffolk Times online and in print Thursday for full details.

it is not legal : 3/17/2010
No, it is not legal to feed deer. In fact, the fines are quite heavy and this is a growing problem. Clearly, people are making a dire situation much worse. We foward all complaints to the DEC enforcement officer. He lives locally and reponds promptly. Regards, Scott Russell

Feeding The Deer : 3/17/2010
The couple next door to me throw a pail of cracked-corn around a tree in front of the yard each evening to feed the deer. It is a dangerous corner for drivers. My neighbors are animal lovers as I am, but this is causing our deer population to not only increase, but to hang out where both they and car drivers are put in danger. My question is this: Is this legal,a nd can it be stopped? The deer actually stand and wait to be fed!

Can Southold Town Board effectively address this issue / problem? The Town Board is neither the Devil nor a god.
A mutual admission that we have a problem is a prerequisite for any hope we can find a solution.

Just shoot em. : 3/16/2010
Tell me something, cause I left LI 15 yrs ago and never looked back.
If a wild dog or neighbors pet came on your property and caused harm to your child, what immediate legal approach would/could you take?
Here in the south, you can take your 22 out and shoot to kill.
Heck you can do that if someone trespasses on your neighbor’s property here in the south.
Yep.. the remedy is.. if these deer are causing harm to your property..shoot them.
You know in Alaska they feed the homeless with any moose that wander where they shouldn't.
Just a suggestion.

derr mgmt. : 3/16/2010
Actually, we looked at contraceptice approaches and it was not a cost issue. We are simply not allowed to implement this plan because of State and County Health Dept. concerns. We continue to struggle with the DEC and other permitting agencies to allow us to effectively address this problem. The issue has the attention and committment of the entire Town board and I am not sure why you suggested otherwise. If you would like info on what our ongoing efforts are, please feel free to contact me. Regards, Scott

No laughing matter : 3/16/2010
The truth is that the deer population on the North Fork is out of control. How many deer-related deaths (i.e., automobile accidents) will it take before Southold Town implements a deer-control plan that actually yields significant results? Or perhaps we only have to wait until someone who is actually "important" dies - like the family member of a local politician, or someone prominent in the community. And God forbid Southold Town should look into deer contraceptives as a possible partial solution - even the thought of the potential cost of this plan of action would have Republican taxpayers screaming. Expect many more deer-related obits in the future.

In requiem, Sarcasm.

Your "sarcasm" was recognized. It just isn't as witty as you think.

Get back in the shed you Tool : 3/15/2010

I have often wondered where deer go to have their VCRs and TV sets repaired, now I know.
Oh, and to the other guy complaining about overdevelopment, you haven't lived here very long, because 20 years before your house, and all the other houses were built, we had a lot of empty space, and hardly any deer.
Perspective is everything.

Help Wanted: Pest Control Personnel : 3/15/2010
It's not hunters who are causing deer to roam around our homes and businesses, it's overdevelopment. A young man from Greenport recently died in a deer related crash, a business is damaged, these incidences won't go away on their own!

Deer Shopping on Love Land : 3/15/2010
How ironic! Those who have worked on Love Land or have owned businesses there in the early '90's will remember a deer breaking through the front glass window of the Love Lane TV and VCR repair shop! I do!

Venison, Egg & Cheese, Please : 3/15/2010
As deer become more integrated into our society, their needs will obviously increase. Local hunters have driven them from their normal habitat in the woods and fields, and they are now forced to forage in the more urban areas such as Love Lane. Why just the other morning I saw Judy taking an order from some young buck looking for an egg sandwich. Also, as springtime approaches, there are many a good deer who will be in need of some nice lavender soaps, or other home decor items, which I am sure Loretta has in plentiful supply, and at reasonable prices. Be kind to your neighbors.
