Anderson-Becht-Guyton, Eva
Paid Notice   0 comments below

Eva Anderson-Becht-Guyton of Southold died at her home on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010. She was 93 years old.

She was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Oct. 20, 1916, and came to the United States in 1923. She lived in the Bronx, attended Washington Irving High School in New York City and did her post-graduate studies at the Cooper Union School of Art. She also studied painting at the Wallace Harrison School of Painting in New York City.

In 1939 she accepted a position to teach decorative design at the American School of Design on 58th Street in New York City. In 1945 she began a long career at Cooper Union as professor of decorative design.

In the 1960s she branched out to teach privately in the field of interior design, becoming involved in creating murals for the estates on Long Island and in Palm Beach, Fla. "It is so great to see my ideas materialize," she often remarked. At this time, she also began teaching evening classes at the Oceanside High School.

Eva often said that her art expressions started at the age of two when her mother gave her a box of chalk to use on the parquet wooden floors.

She joined Oceanside Lutheran church, where she was an active member for 34 years. She was a Sunday school instructor there for 33 of those years and superintendent of junior Sunday school for 11. She was also a longtime member of the church Altar Guild and very active in its Youth of Oceanside social and sports program.

Upon her move to the North Fork in 1975, she joined St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Greenport and joined the WELCA Ladies, which she led for seven years. She enjoyed working at the harvest festival and dinners there. Only age reduced her ability to participate more fully.

Predeceased by her first husband, Harry Beach, in 1979, she is survived by her husband, William "Bill" Guyton; a son, Lawrence Becht; a daughter, Rande Langdon; stepsons, William and Edward Guyton; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Linda, and two stepsons, Kirk and Daniel Guyton.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Feb. 1, at St. Peter's by the Rev. Garret Johnson and the Rev. Raymond Birkel. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes, Southold.

Memorials to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978, or St. Peter's Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 242, Greenport, NY 11944, would be appreciated.
