Herreshoffs rule the channel
SIYC | Powerboat interrupts racing after final mark

Competition was keen as two Herreshoffs rounded a mark near Dering Harbor during the July 11 regatta. Jessica Jones photo
The Shelter Island Yacht Club's Herreshoff 12½ fleet sailed the annual “King of the Channel” race on Saturday, July 18. Twenty-six boats started the race in Dering Harbor at 2 p.m. After a course change, the boats raced to Pipes Cove for a windward and leeward leg, after which the boats continued back to Dering Harbor and finished off the pier. With winds from the southwest at 12 knots, the race was completed in less than an hour and a half.

Dave Ruby was in the lead for four legs of the race. The lead was close among Ruby, Larry Landry and Dennis Clark. Clark sailed the middle of the channel, while Ruby and Landry stayed closer to shore until the final mark rounding. Landry pulled ahead by a few feet, allowing Dennis Clark to fall in behind him, ahead of Ruby. Unfortunately, a powerboat cruised through the race course, causing Bruce Brewer and Ward Murphy to change their course and lose several boat lengths.

Landry won the race “by a nose,” Clark finished second a half-boat length behind Landry. Ruby followed one boat length behind and Brewer rounded out the top four.

Regatta in Pipes Cove

Bruce Brewer placed first in the July 11 SIYC Herreshoff 12½ racing, edging Dennis Clark by one point; trailing Clark by four points was Kathryn Dinkel. Ward Murphy rounded out the top four in the 20-boat field.

The first course in Pipes Cove was a standard triangle and windward/leeward final leg. Conditions were breezy with moderate chop. The final race began in Pipes Cove and ended off the Yacht Club's North Pier.
