Etchells race to Paradise Point

This past Saturday marked the season's inaugural races for the Shelter Island Yacht Club's Herreshoff 12 ½ and Etchells classes. The Etchells race commenced at 1 p.m. from Dering Harbor; they raced to Paradise Point with winds from the south at five knots.

The Herreshoff race started around 2 p.m., after many course adjustments due to the extremely light wind. Seventeen boats started in Dering Harbor on a course intended to the N10 channel mark, near the North Ferry route. Unfortunately, the steadily decreasing winds forced an abandonment of the race before any boats reached the mark.

Meanwhile, the Etchells completed their race to Paradise Point and finished just off the North Pier at the Yacht Club. The turbulent current often found in the channel of the North Ferry combined with the light wind near Sunset Beach proved to be a challenge for the sailors to navigate.

Crews set chutes in light air.
Andrew Wolf and Peter Rowsom took first place, Scott Kaufman got second, Will Ricketson won third and Christopher Rowsom followed in fourth place.

The Etchells Fleet 15 started the season with the Long Island Sound Championship on the weekend of June 13 and 14. A total of 22 boats, hailing from Coecles Harbor to Canada, were on the water in six race events; 21 boats competed and 19 finished. Hank Lammens had an impressive run with Jamie Mills and Ched Proctor head-to-head to fill out the top three boats. The results are listed below.
