The Shelter Island Reporter Sports News RSS http://www2.timesreview.com/SIR/ Official Newspaper of the Town of Shelter Island and the Village of Dering Harbor en-us Monarchs score big win over Porters http://www2.timesreview.com/SIR/stories/I-fball-10-09 You can say this about the Bishop McGann-Mercy Monarchs: they are a high school football team full of surprises. In more ways than one, too. First, the Monarchs started the season with a surprising loss to the Center Moriches Red Devils, a team that picked up its first win in two seasons at the varsity level. Since then the Monarchs, seeded 14th in Suffolk County Division IV, have strung together three straight wins. Their most recent triumph, a 27-14 defeat of their rivals, the Greenport/Southold/Mattituck/Shelter Island Porters, on Friday night, leaves the Monarchs sitting pretty. Guess who is in fifth place with a 3-1 record, on course for what would be their first playoff berth in 16 years? Indians falter against Port Jeff http://www2.timesreview.com/SIR/stories/I-vball-10-092008-10-08T18-28-17 Volleyball is a game of momentum. It is fast-paced, high-scoring and things can change in an instant. Friday, October 3 was a day of distraction for Shelter Island. Three members of the team were unable to play due to injury or family obligations. SATs loomed the following morning, followed by a wedding involving several team members. Weekend college visitations were also a factor. Whitebread racers, look out for Island ferries http://www2.timesreview.com/SIR/stories/I-sailing-10-09 When the “Whitebread Round the Whirl” race, 33.5 miles from Cutchogue, around Shelter Island and back, started in 1992, there were only eight participants. When the race’s 15th running starts on Saturday, there will be 125. “It has caught on far beyond what I thought would happen,” John Lockwood said. “It just grows and grows.” Birds of Shelter Island http://www2.timesreview.com/SIR/stories/I-birds-10-09 Migration for the fall season has been rather slow thus far. I saw the usual flock of laughing and ring-billed gulls taking advantage of the late summer ant swarm at the South Ferry channel on September 13. An eastern screech owl was calling from the trees around the office building that night. Mike Scheibel and I saw the first two common loons of the season there on the next day and two black-crowned night-herons appeared that night. Other than that, I had a red-breasted nuthatch near my house on Ward Road on the 19th. He might have been looking for the feeders, which I promptly installed the next day. Sherri rocks with high handicap score http://www2.timesreview.com/SIR/stories/I-bowling-10-09 What do you get when you take a bowler with an average of 122 and add 100 pins along with a swanky 7-Dance? You get Bowler of the Week, Rockette Sherri Surozenski. Sherri kicked off the night fiercely with a 175 game, 53 pins over her average. She had one open frame and two strikes in her first game. In her second game, she almost struck out but still managed to get a 149. In the last game, the alleys took a turn for the worse and started giving the ladies problems. This didn’t stop Sherri; she was still able to bowl above her potential and get a 142. Ms. Surozenski pulled in a 622 handicap series and the high handicap game with a 227. Congrats, Sherri.
