The Shelter Island Reporter Local News RSS http://www2.timesreview.com/SIR/ Official Newspaper of the Town of Shelter Island and the Village of Dering Harbor en-us http://www2.timesreview.com/SIR/stories/I-powerplay-08-28 The Town Board took action to protect its interests should the Long Island Power Authority go through with plans to build a substation on Shelter Island and challenged the state agency’s authority to regulate itself. It was not a bellicose shot across the bow and it elicited little comment from the board. At the end of Tuesday’s weekly Town Hall work session, Supervisor Jim Dougherty convened a special meeting and the board quickly approved a film permit application. Then Supervisor Dougherty said, “The town is determined to keep control of the LIPA situation” and said he had discussed the concern with LIPA. He read a resolution declaring the Town Board “lead agency” in making a SEQRA determination on the construction of a substation on Shelter Island and the board unanimously approved it. http://www2.timesreview.com/SIR/stories/I-library-08-282008-08-27T18-02-10 While architects continue to tweak plans for a major expansion to the Shelter Island Public Library, voters are trying to figure out what the project will mean to them before they go to the polls on October 11. According to Library Board President Jo-Ann Robotti, the library expansion will cost Islanders an estimated tax increase of 51 cents per household per day. She stressed that the number is only an estimate as the library’s 2009 operating budget has yet to be finalized. http://www2.timesreview.com/SIR/stories/I-profile-08-282008-08-27T18-20-08 “Best selling” is the phrase most likely to precede author Daniel Silva’s name. In the 11 years since he published his debut novel, “The Unlikely Spy,” he has written nine more books and every one of them has been a New York Times and an international bestseller. So it is indeed an apt and worthy descriptor. http://www2.timesreview.com/SIR/stories/I-immigrants-08-28 In a continuation of last summer’s Reporter series addressing the Latino community in Greenport and Shelter Island, an interview was held last month with Sister Margaret Smythe, director of the Hispanic Apostolate for the North Fork, an outreach center attempting to address some of the ills besetting the Latino community. The conclusion of that interview follows. http://www2.timesreview.com/SIR/stories/I-sailingclub-08-28 A new Sailing Club is on the horizon for Shelter Island School students thanks to an offer from the Shelter Island Yacht Club presented during the Board of Education meeting on August 25. The School Board addressed several new topics and programs Monday night, including a new English language arts text, a new handicap ramp, new subcommittees and the need to hire a new business official. http://www2.timesreview.com/SIR/stories/I-aida-08-28 My e-mail this morning (Tuesday, August 26) contained the following message from Maureen Corkery concerning the progress of the yawl Aida toward Shelter Island: “Greg, just FYI, Doug Hylan called at 1900 (7 p.m. last night) to say they had reached the Isle of Shoals, New Hampshire. They had to power-sail more than they wished because breezes were not too favorable in direction/strength. They hope to reach the Canal at 1800 tomorrow to catch the current going west.”
