The adoptions come after Times/Review Newspapers published a story on the abandoned dogs. That story was subsequently followed by several regional and national media outlets.
Many people have also shown interest in the other two beagles at the shelter, Wilber and Reeses, also found wandering near Orient, said the shelter's executive director Gillian Pultz on Friday. "But we don't have any confirmed applications yet," she said.
Ms. Pultz has spent much of the week responding to calls from press and animal rescue groups after the media frenzy that followed the first Jan. 28 article, she said.
She's also been working to correct misinformation appearing in several reports that there are “vicious” feral beagles “terrorizing” the North Fork.
“There are no packs of wild beagles roaming around out here that people need to be worrying about,” she said.
Ms. Pultz said she hopes to have Wilber and Reeses placed in homes by the end of the weekend.
