James McGreevy, 39, of Peconic was arrested on Friday after police said he stole money from a local firewood stand on County Route 48 in Southold.
The stand 's owner said that Mr. McGreevy pulled up in a pickup truck next to the stand, pried open a box containing money and took the cash.
The owner confronted Mr. McGreevy who then dropped the money and fled in his truck. Police later pulled him over near Goldsmith's Inlet.
Mr. McGreevy was charged with petit larceny, criminal mischief and possession of burglar's tools. He was brought to police headquarters and held for processing.
On Thursday police also arrested Michael Lafreniere, 22, of Southold for illegal possession of the prescription painkiller Vicodin. Mr. Lafrreniere was arrested on Pike Street in Mattituck after he was found with 29 pills in an improperly labeled bottle, police said. He was charged with three counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance. He was arraigned and released on bail.
