Who's running for fire commissioner?

SunLand voters will be asked to elect new fire commissioners this week in their local fire district elections. A total of 23 candidates are seeking positions in nine fire districts from Wading River to Mount Sinai. Of those races, five incumbents are seeking re-election unopposed.

Gordon Heights

One five-year term

Philip Gordon

Age: 48

Occupation: Registered nurse, Stony Brook University Medical Center

Fire service experience: Former EMT; firefighter in Gordon Heights Fire Department for nine years

Reason for running: "I love the position of fire commissioner."

Alex Hanson

Age: 48

Occupation: Production manager for manufacturer

Fire service experience: None

Reason for running: "As a tax fighter, to try and balance the stakes between the costs as opposed to safety."

One single-year term

Maryanne Owens

Age: 49

Occupation: Senior credit representative with a Ronkonkoma company

Fire service experience: None

Reason for running: "It's time for the community of Gordon Heights to take back their fire department."

Patricia Wilson-Brown

Reason for running: "My decision to run for Commissioner of the Gordon Heights Fire District is based on working knowledge of the Fire Service and a fierce desire to give back to my community."

Pasquale Pirozzi

Age: 50

Occupation: Warehouse supervisor

Fire service experience: Member of the Ridge Board of Fire Commissioners for 10 years; 31-year member of Ridge Fire Department, where numerous positions he has held over the years include chief and president. First responder during the 1995 wild fires. Awards include Firefighter of the Year.

Reason for running: "I like to keep the district up to date and bring it into the 21st century. We've done a lot in the last couple of years."

Thomas Logan

Age: 37

Occupation: Self-employed contractor for industrial installation business

Fire service experience: 17-year member of Rocky Point Fire Department, where he has held the position of assistant chief for six years and chief for two years. New York State certified EMT. Named firefighter of the year in 2001 by the Rocky Point Fire Department Chiefs of Staff.

Reason for running: "I can use my experience as a businessman and firefighter, and, hopefully, we can keep the budget where it is and try to save the taxpayers some money."

Stephen Tumulty

Age: 57

Occupation: Retired firefighter, Fire Department of New York

Fire service experience: 38-year member of Rocky Point Fire Department, where he has held the rank of third assistant chief and captain. Founded and continues to oversee the North Shore Marine Search and Rescue Team.

Reason for running: "I believe that our community deserves the best fire protection and medical services we can provide, and my experience has given me the knowledge needed to make the necessary decisions to give Rocky Point and Shoreham such a department."

Wading River

James Meier

Age: 49

Occupation: Senior electronic tech specialist and local emergency coordinator, Brookhaven National Laboratory

Fire service experience: Member of Wading River Fire Department and Explorer Post adviser

Reason for running: "I just try to be responsible and accountable to the taxpayers. Out of everybody running, I'm probably the most experienced."

Michael Harrigan

Age: 37

Occupation: Suffolk County police officer

Fire service experience: Volunteer firefighter, member of the fire police. Recipient of the New York State Liberty Award and Suffolk County's 2008 Firefighter of the Year award for saving a heart attack victim's life.

Reason for running: "I believe that with my dedicated civic background, community involvement, education, professional background as well as my volunteer status within the Wading River Fire Department, I will bring a well rounded perspective to the Board of Fire Commissioners."

Robert Quaranta

Age: 50

Occupation: Maintenance, Wading River Fire District

Fire service experience: 10-year member of Wading River Fire Department. Prior to that, Mr. Quaranta served 35 years as an EMT for the Brentwood Fire Department's ambulance company and is also a past chief and president there as well. Mr. Quaranta is also certified as a National Fire Safety officer.

Reason for running: "I really do think that we have pretty good candidates running, but I feel that I'm the most experienced out of any of them in business and in the fire department. I think that I would really be a benefit to the [Board of Fire Commissioners]."

Edward Frost

Age: 39

Occupation: Riverhead Town police officer

Fire service experience: Former volunteer firefighter, fire police

Reason for running: "Through my work experience, I have gained valuable hands-on experience with the budget process of a municipal government, which is similar to that of a fire district. The budget process is one of the chief responsibilities of a fire commissioner. This experience combined with my education, professional background, and my community involvement as a volunteer with the Wading River Fire Department [makes me feel] I am the most qualified candidate to represent the best interests of the taxpayers."

Matthew Colitti

Age: 30

Occupation: Supervisor, IT support department, Stony Brook University Medical Center

Fire service experience: Ten-year member of Wading River Fire Department, captain of Truck and Rescue Company 3

Reason for running: "I'd like to help out the community. I'd like to bring in my technology background and help out the current board now."

Mount Sinai

One five-year term

Stephen Applebaum

Age: 57

Occupation: Self-employed

Fire service experience: Volunteer firefighter for 35 years, EMT with the Port Jefferson Ambulance Company, where he previously served as the administration officer for 12 years.

Reason for running: "I want to provide a quality service that protects the community."

Anthony Tricarico

Age: 53

Occupation: Retired captain, Fire Department of New York

Fire service experience: 28 years of experience with FDNY, where he was decorated five times for bravery and received a World Trade Center Rescuers Ribbon; 19 years of experience with Mount Sinai Fire Department, where he held the position of chief. One of the co-founders of the Brookhaven Technical Rescue Task Force.

Reason for running: "I feel that I'm good for the job. I know the job already. I think I'll do a good job as commissioner."

Thomas Lyon

Incumbent running unopposed

Age: 73

Occupation: Semiretired

Fire service experience: First joined Coram Fire Department in 1954; served as fire chief for 10 years; has been a fire commissioner since 1975

Reason for running: "I feel that I contribute to the good and welfare of every resident and taxpayer in Coram. And I enjoy seeing the productivity of our department people taking care of every property in the district."

Middle Island

Christopher Campo

Age: 48

Occupation: General contractor

Fire service experience: Board of Fire Commissioners since 2007; firefighter since 1991

Reason for running: "To continue my good work. To continue serving the public."

Miller Place

One five-year term

Jeffrey Kinkaid

Incumbent running unopposed

Age: 56

Occupation: Air traffic control trainer

Fire service experience: 20-year veteran of Miller Place Fire Department, where he has served in the positions of captain, assistant chief and chief. Prior to that, Mr. Kinkaid served with New Hyde Park Fire Department for 10 years.

Reason for running: "We have a good board that works together well. We take care of the needs of the firefighters as well as balance the budget."

Sound Beach

Michael Guerrisi

Occupation: Suffolk County employee

Fire service experience: Member of the Board of Fire Commissioners for 10 years; 18-year member of Sound Beach Fire Department; former EMT

Reason for running: "To continue the fiscal responsibility that the board has upheld and also to provide the best service for the residents of Sound Beach."
