Offshore reports came in this week from Bill Czech at Jamesport Bait and Tackle in Mattituck. Czech mentioned mako shark catches 30 miles out and small bluefin tuna as well, but the best catch by far was a 195-pound bigeye recorded by Eugene Burger of Cutchogue. The tuna also placed third in a Block Island Tri-State tuna tournament.

Czech reported some small bluefish here and there off beaches, but he also caught a 13-pound slammer off Rocky Point on a bucktail. Ed Kopack at Warren's Tackle Center in Aquebogue figured the scup fishing was still OK in the Riverhead area in Long Island Sound, with some weakfish in the Peconics off Jessups Neck and Nassau Point. Ryan at Wego Fishing in Southold thought scup sizes had picked up from the Middle Grounds to Buoy 16 in Little Peconic Bay. Weigh-ins at the shop included a sea bass of 4.5 pounds and a summer flounder of 6.6 pounds. Scup and fluke continue to be caught off Long Island Sound beaches as well. Charlie Caraftis at Charlie's Mattituck Marina on Mattituck Creek said local boats were limiting out on porgies in much less than an hour between the Inlet and Horton Point. The biggest scup were still around 2.5 pounds.
