Dylan Gould and Ed O'Neill of Riverhead High School were named the co-recipients of East End Rowing's rower of the year award for 2008. Among their accomplishments this year, they were: first in junior doubles at the New York State Championships, second in junior doubles in the Stotesbury Cup in Philadelphia, third in the United States National Scholastic Championships in junior doubles in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and sixth among 41 crews entered in the United States Club National Championships in junior A doubles in Camden, N.J.

On Sunday, the two Riverheaders rowed singles in the United States Junior National Rowing Speed Order Trials in Mercer, N.J. Gould was sixth and O'Neill 23rd out of the top 23 singles rowers in the East.

More than 560 rowers competed in the Snowflake Regatta recently on the Peconic River in downtown Riverhead. Sophomores Renee Girard and Lauren Woodhull, rowing in girls' varsity doubles for East End Rowing/Bishop McGann-Mercy High School, finished second. They were beaten by the defending national champions from St. John the Baptist. It was the first time Girard and Woodhull had raced since early August. Dylan Gould and Ed O'Neill of Riverhead High School were second and third, respectively, in boys' singles.
