DOUGHERTY NAMED ALL-COUNTY Julia Dougherty received all-county recognition and was one of five Riverhead High School softball players to receive awards at the Suffolk County Softball Coaches Association awards dinner last week. Amelia Czelatka and Julia Morrow were all-division winners, and Emily Commins and Kara Vonatzski were named all-league players for Riverhead, which won the League IV sportsmanship award. Riverhead's junior varsity team won a county sportsmanship award.
SULLIVAN STARTS SERIES WITH WIN Nine sailors, eight in Sunfish and one in a Force 5, were greeted with spectacular sailing conditions on Monday evening when the Southold Yacht Club kicked off its 2009 Sunfish Fleet Championship Series. Joe Sullivan made the most of it by winning the opening night with 13 points. His nearest challengers were Geoff Loffredo (14 points), Christian Honig (17), Alex Kraebel (19) and Beth Fleisher (21).
A steady six-to-10-knot southwest breeze held throughout the evening as the sailors got in five windward-leeward races.
OT WINS KEEP WOODSIDE UNBEATEN Woodside Orchards gained ground in its lead atop the North Side-Out Beach Volleyball League by winning all four of its games last Wednesday evening. On an unusually calm evening at Breakwater Beach in Mattituck, Bob Gammon, Jonathan Polistena, Kelly Urbanik and Ryan Wilsberg helped undefeated Woodside Orchards (16-0) pull out a pair of overtime games, 22-20 and 23-21, over Windy Acres Farm. Woodside also defeated Katy's Hairstyles, 21-7, and The Underground, 21-13. Meanwhile, second-place Di Angela Leather (13-3), playing with only three players, dropped off the pace by splitting its four games. The threesome of Dan Kujawski, Patty Millman and Missy Weiss scored 21-14 wins over Peconic Home Inspections and Sage Electric. But losses to Founders Tavern, 21-15, and Peconic Home Inspections, 24-22, stung Di Angela.
The American Exterior Eagles (12-4), propelled by the hitting of Tony Medeiros and Frank Polistena, and the passing of Christine Garmes and Michelle Munro, swept their four games. They took two games from King's Dock in addition to posting wins over Rehm Excavation and Neptune Feeds.
Riverhead Building Supply (10-6) also went 4-0 on the night to move up two notches in the standings into fifth place.
