A 33-year-old hospital worker from Wading River died Monday after being struck by an SUV as he stood next to his disabled pickup truck after a fender-bender in Babylon, State Police said.
Jeffrey McGuire was driving at a "high rate of speed" along Ocean Parkway about 7 p.m. when his 2008 GMC Colorado struck the rear end of a Honda Odyssey driven by 79-year-old Rudolph Rosenberg of Williston Park, police said.
The collision disabled Mr. McGuire's pickup and it came to rest on the left-hand lane of the eastbound roadway, said Trooper Frank Bandiero. Mr. McGuire then exited the truck and, as he was standing next to the passenger side, was struck by an eastbound Dodge Durango.
The Durango's driver, Christopher Howes, 39, of Hampton Bays, Trooper Bandiero explained, had tried to swerve to the right to avoid hitting Mr. McGuire, but failed.
Mr. Howes' SUV then struck a 1992 Dodge Durango driven by 29-year-old Patchogue resident Eric Swanger, who had stopped to help Mr. Rosenberg, police said. The crash scene was closed for over five hours as police investigated.
Mr. McGuire died at the scene, police said.
His coworkers at South Nassau Community Hospital in Oceanside declined comment through hospital spokesman Damian Becker. Mr. Becker said funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized.
Mr. Rosenberg was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip where he was treated for minor injuries and released, officials said. Both Mr. Howes and Mr. Swanger were not injured in the crash. Trooper Bandiero said no charges were filed and that investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role. Still, investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or has other information, to call 631-756-3300.
