Female beagles adopted
Two of four abandoned hunting dogs find homes   2 comments below

Wilma
Wilma and Pieces, abandoned female beagles likely dumped by rabbit hunters before being taken to Southold's animal shelter, have been adopted.

The adoptions come after Times/Review Newspapers published a story on the abandoned dogs. That story was subsequently followed by several regional and national media outlets.

Many people have also shown interest in the other two beagles at the shelter, Wilber and Reeses, also found wandering near Orient, said the shelter's executive director Gillian Pultz on Friday. "But we don't have any confirmed applications yet," she said.

Pieces
Ms. Pultz has spent much of the week responding to calls from press and animal rescue groups after the media frenzy that followed the first Jan. 28 article, she said.

She's also been working to correct misinformation appearing in several reports that there are “vicious” feral beagles “terrorizing” the North Fork.

“There are no packs of wild beagles roaming around out here that people need to be worrying about,” she said.

Ms. Pultz said she hopes to have Wilber and Reeses placed in homes by the end of the weekend.

Beagles wandering the Orient : 2/8/2010
They should make these individuals who abandoned these wonderful dogs pay a hefty fine!
I am so happy the two beagles (Wilma and Pieces) found a wonderful home and hopefully more will get adopted. soon

Abandoned beagles : 2/6/2010
We are grateful to hear that the "feral" beagles are safe; what a dispicable act it was to abandon them. Shame on the individual who committed such cruelty and on those who frightened communities by reporting the misinformation that these poor creatures were terrorizing our Island. How ridiculous that was! We wish these beautiful dogs long and happy lives, with people who will love and care for them.
